Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body (soma) centered approach to holistic healing, grounded in the relationship between mind and body.
Rather than focusing only on the thoughts or emotions surrounding a traumatic event, SE draws on the body's natural capacity to resolve trauma, chronic stress, and pain. This approach creates space for new, gentle experiences, supporting sensations that have become habitual or “stuck” to gradually reorganize and move toward ease. The Roots of SE SE is a result of over 40 years of observation, research, and hands on development by Dr. Peter Levine. His multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, biology, neuroscience, medical biophysics, and indigenous healing practices revealed that trauma is held in the nervous system - shaping both our body and our experience of life. A Gentle, Embodied Approach Somatic Experiencing (SE) allows us to move beyond purely cognitive thought processes, embracing a more embodied, intuitive approach. It facilitates the completion of self-protective motor responses and supports the gentle release of energy that may be held in the body. This fosters a deeper sense of connection, safety, and ease. By attending to the delicate rhythm of the nervous system - between activation (sympathetic) and relaxation (parasympathetic) - we gradually become more resilient and able to return to a sense of calm when life allows. A Path Back to Ease SE honors the body’s innate ability to heal and restore self-regulation. It can bring back a sense of aliveness, relaxation, and wholeness, while providing tools to resolve fixated physiological patterns. Supporting the nervous system enhances both physical and emotional well-being. SE is founded on the understanding that humans have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma and stress. Because our nervous system connects to every part of our body, balancing it enhances both our physical and emotional well being in countless ways.
